City of Reading Launches “Water Wise in Reading” Initiative to Promote Safe, High-Quality Drinking Water
Reading, Michigan — The City of Reading is proud to announce a series of ongoing water system improvements and the launch of a new public education campaign, “Water Wise in Reading,” aimed at helping residents and property owners better understand and protect their drinking water.
As part of the City’s continued investment in infrastructure and public health, Reading is taking proactive steps to address potential risks associated with aging plumbing systems, including lead exposure, while ensuring residents have the tools and knowledge to keep their water safe.
A Commitment to Safe, Reliable Water
The City of Reading continues to prioritize:
-
Maintenance and upgrades to the municipal water system
-
Monitoring and compliance with state and federal water quality standards
-
Public education to empower residents with practical, everyday solutions
“Providing safe, high-quality drinking water is one of our most important responsibilities,” said [Mayor/City Manager Name]. “The ‘Water Wise in Reading’ initiative ensures our community not only benefits from infrastructure improvements, but also understands simple steps they can take at home to further protect their families.”
What “Water Wise in Reading” Means for Residents
The campaign provides clear, actionable guidance based on State of Michigan and public health recommendations, including:
-
Flushing your tap before use
Water sitting in pipes may contain higher levels of lead; running water helps reduce this risk -
Using cold water for drinking and cooking
Hot water can dissolve lead more easily from plumbing materials -
Cleaning faucet aerators regularly
Aerators can collect debris, including particulate lead, and should be cleaned at least every six months -
Using certified water filters when appropriate
Filters meeting NSF/ANSI standards can reduce both dissolved and particulate lead -
Being aware of construction activity
Ground disturbances can release particles from pipes, temporarily affecting water quality
Infrastructure Improvements & Ongoing Work
The City is actively working to:
-
Identify and address aging or lead-containing service lines
-
Improve system reliability through targeted infrastructure upgrades
-
Coordinate construction projects with public notification and safety guidance
Construction activity, while necessary for long-term improvements, can temporarily affect water quality. Residents are encouraged to take precautionary steps during these periods, such as flushing water and checking aerators.
Community Education & Resources
As part of the initiative, the City will provide:
-
Educational mailers and fact sheets
-
Online resources at readingmichigan.org
-
Social media updates and tips
-
Guidance for homeowners, landlords, and contractors
Residents are also encouraged to review their annual Consumer Confidence Report and contact the City for information on water testing.
A Community-Wide Effort
“Water Wise in Reading” reflects a collaborative approach involving:
-
City leadership and public works
-
Local schools and community organizations
-
Property owners and residents
Together, these efforts ensure that Reading remains a safe, informed, and forward-thinking community.
