What is the “Social District”

The Social District Reading, MI is the program name for the City of Reading Social District, which was established by the Reading City Council on July 24, 2023, as allowed under Public Act 124 of 2020.

The Social District contains a commons area, where individuals age 21+ can enjoy an adult beverage from a participating establishment outdoors in designated public areas downtown.

If you are a bar/restaurant that wants to participate, please consult with the Economic Development Director to find out how to get started.

HOW TO ENJOY:

Order your favorite adult beverage in a Social District Reading, MI cup at a participating establishment.

Drink your beverage within the designated Social District Reading, MI boundaries.

Discard your Social District Reading, MI approved cup in an appropriate trash receptacle when empty — no refills.

Enjoy the Social District Reading, MI Monday–Thursday , from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m.-11 p.m.

  • Of the Social District and its rules
  • Of the restaurants, bars, and their staff
  • Of your public spaces

The municipality can revoke the Social District designation, temporarily with proper notice given to businesses for events or permanently after at least one public hearing on the proposed revocation, if it is determined that the Social District was a public nuisance or threatened the health, safety, or welfare of the public.
